Western Colorado Museums and History

Venture into the frontier at Fort Uncompahgre in Delta on a site where Ute Indians and trappers once traded. Throughout the summer you can stroll back in time as the Fort's Mountain Man takes you on an interpretive tour of the Fort and its lifestyle. Be sure to catch "Christmas at the Fort" in mid-December, to get a glimpse of frontier life. Fort Uncompahgre is a re-constructed trading post to replicate the original fort. Traders, trappers and native Americans used the Fort to trade their goods and to purchase their supplies. Antoine Robidoux built the original fort in 1828 where it lasted for 18 years. It was then moved to what is now considered modern day Delta. Today people worldwide visit this living history museum.

The Delta History Museum boasts a world class butterfly collection, dinosaur bones, 100 year old hand made silk robe (a gift from the King of Siam) and legendary Tom Horn's braided bridle. The museum is stocked with outlaws, local lore and much more. You will be enchanted by the common notions of the day and the wonderful collection of photographs. The museum's book store features a wide array of great historical and pictorial books including "A Spirit Returns", authored by local historian Jim Wetzel. All the proceeds from the book benefit the Delta County Museum and their efforts.

Pioneer Town Museum in Cedaredge has an outstanding collection of historic artifacts, including an entire Main Street equipped with wooden sidewalks and every shop you would find 100 years ago. Save some time for the working blacksmith shop, Sand Creek School House, homesteader's log cabin, Sutherland Indian Museum, Doris Doll and Toy House, famous Bar-I Silos, Austin Railroad Depot, and the award-winning Chapel of the Cross. Probably the most visible structure at Pioneer Town is the historic Stolte Packing Shed, a Cedaredge landmark for decades in the fruit packing business. Through remodeling, this stately shed has been converted into a unique multiple-use facility.

The Hotchkiss-Crawford Historical Society Museum delves into the history of the area. Visit the museum, where a collection of saddles and clothes and a chuck wagon represent the lifestyle of the first settlers in the Gunnison River's North Fork Valley.

In Paonia, two adjacent history museums, the Paonia Museum and the Bowie Schoolhouse Museum, offer a step back into the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Read old articles about fruit growing in the area. Explore the abandoned mines still scattered around town or cool off at Paonia Reservoir.
