Our Changing Western Colorado SeasonsFALLEach fall nature paints the hillsides up to the mountain tops with electric colors of gold, red, orange and yellow. The aspen quake and the pine accent the whole dance. The cooler temperatures and shorter days produce the color change. Take a drive to the top of the mountains and view the whole valley as it prepares for winter. Orchards, vineyards and row crops all share their unique color to the palette. It's the perfect time for a drive on one of the Scenic Byways. Join us for the annual Color Sunday celebration along the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway. Of course, Fall brings hunting to the high country. Lodgers here welcome the hunter and are ready to assist you with needed information, lodging and food. The colors offered by nature make a splendid driving tour in the Fall. The mountains are flush with the hues nature provides. The settings for family gatherings and weddings are impressive. Powderhorn Resort is the favorite local ski area. Either way, it is a delightful time of the year, and seems to start when the Globe Willows begin to change their hue. One morning as you wake, you will notice a different "feeling" in the fresh air, and then you will know….IT'S SPRING! Or it may be the first song of the Meadowlark that draws your attention. In our wide open spaces, the sounds, smells and sights of Spring are not interrupted by noise, pollution, or traffic jams. Spring also brings the young green shoots of the first crops on the field. This seems to happen all in one day! And speaking of Spring crops, be sure to visit in April to enjoy the blossoms in the orchards. The sweetest of sweet smells! The annual return of Sandhill Cranes is a sure sign of spring. The urge to migrate moves the Sandhills from their warm winter quarters to Harts Basin, just east of Eckert. Usually arriving in early March, they are one of the earliest migratory birds to visit our area. Sandhill Cranes mate for life and pairs return to the same nesting locations year after year. These birds have an unmistakable haunting call, which locals listen for as they are beginning their field or yard work. A quick call to the local "bird lady" lets her know to jump in her car and head on down to Harts Basin with her binoculars.
